An IT Christmas Song!
by
Mary Elizabeth McNeely, DOUG Technology Meetings Chair
Sung to the tune of "Do You Hear What I Hear?"
|
| |
"Do You Hear What I Hear?"
Said the end user to the help desk,
Do you see what I see?
In the data center, help desk,
Do you see what I see?
A database, stumbling through the night
With response time that's really a blight
With response time that's really a blight
Said the help desk to the developer,
Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, developer,
Do you hear what I hear?
Angry users, in varying degrees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
Said the developer to the DBA,
Do you know what I know?
Pray for peace, DBA,
Do you know what I know?
Our users want to throw us to the dogs
Let us start the app tuning slog
Let us start the app tuning slog
Said the DBA to the CIO,
Listen to what I say
In your palace warm, CIO!
Listen to what I say
Cary Millsap, with his tuning might
Can repair this performance fright
Can repair this performance fright
Said the CIO to Cary Millsap,
I'm not sure what to say
Get us some relief, Cary!
I'm not sure what to say
Our users, gave us the shoulder cold
Let us turn performance to gold
Let us turn performance to gold
Said Cary Millsap to the people everywhere,
Method R can fix this
With properly scoped trace files
Method R can fix this
The database, will blaze through ev'ry night
It will bring you goodness and light
It will bring you goodness and light

"STUPID DBA/DEVELOPER TRICKS!"
by Mary Elizabeth McNeely, DOUG Technology Meetings Chair
|
| |
Welcome to the inaugural column of “Stupid DBA/Developer Tricks”, where you can read about some of your peers’ not-so-proud Oracle-related moments.
So, my story … I decided to make a small change to a client’s Oracle traditional cold backup strategy: instead of copying the database files then zipping them, I wanted to zip them on the fly by writing to a pipe, reading from the pipe, compressing the pipe output and writing it to a gzipped file. Just as “Hey, watch this!!!” have been famous last words….

Review of the March 2006 Hotsos Symposium
by Mary Elizabeth McNeely, DOUG Technology Meetings Chair |
| |
The Hotsos Symposium this year, as usual, didn’t disappoint. Held each spring in the Dallas area by Hotsos, the publisher of the Hotsos Profiler, it offers a choice of Oracle-related lectures during several daily time slots. The optional add-on training day is taught by a single lecturer. This event provides an excellent opportunity to... |
